4 Skills I Never Learned In Ministry School
These skills are a major part of our ministry at Generation 1:9. If I could do college over again, I would take some classes to better educate myself in these areas of ministry.
1. Managing a Ministry Budget.
There is a small amount of pressure applied when spending money that’s not yours. Is this the right purchase? Is this what God wants? Does my spending line up with God’s Vision? Spreadsheets, Financial Goals, Flow Charts, etc. In these areas I am just learning as I go.
2. Lighting and Stage Design.
This is incredibly important to me. 90% of everything that happens in church, happens on the stage. That means people are looking at the stage a lot! So, can we leverage our stage to communicate a message? What message does our stage send? What does our stage communicate about who we are? “Does our ministry environment portray our vision? Values? What could someone learn about God by looking at our stage set? People are visual. If you are gonna have a stage, make a statement.
3. Graphic Design.
I am not an artist. But I find myself constantly looking for ways to communicate our message via graphic design. A picture says a thousand words. Graphic design is time consuming and tedious. A good knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator is very helpful. Most of my graphics are borrowed from freebie sites such as www.creationswap.com However, I am learning how to design more and more these days. The most recent graphic for our upcoming series, “UPGRADE” is 100% original.
4. Videography and Video Editing.
Christian drama and skits are cheesy. But if you can make a good video, then you’ll win. For some reason, drama’s aren’t as cheesy when done on video. Lately, we’ve been committed to using quality cameras and trying to make quality videos. Videography is an art. It’s not as easy as pointing a camera and pressing record. I find that now, when I watch a movie or documentary, I am more aware of the camera operator and editing team. I appreciate their work as well as the work of the actors.
